I installed an 8 inch screw hatch in my Disco on the day I picked it up.  The center flat spot is EXACTLY the right size for it.  As Jimbo and others have siad, the hatch spot is raised well above floor level; I have never gotten a drop of water inside.  At my 165 lbs, the water level with the plugs out is about 1/2 -3/4 inch in the foot wells; at least two inches (three maybe?) below the hatch.

Thanks stant01. Which model/make of 8" hatch did you use? I know not all are created equal.

It says Viking Marine, and it measures 8 inches outside; 6 inches inside.  It came with a nylon bag.
