So I woke early and walked the beach by the pier yesterday...
Hit the surf at Pompano Pier at Daybreak just for a quick cast or dozen....
Had the one rod rigged with a Storm swimbait and One rigged to freeline..
Predawn Nada....Surf Rough - Wind blowin in from the east in my face ( Fun casting the bait caster...lol )
Once the Sun rose a bit and the pelicans gave away their position, Pilchards wre easy to sabiki up ....They were just too far out to castnet.
After numerous cutoffs using "Vanish" 20# Fleuro ( Pure Shi@t I am now convinced) I switched to a 50# Mono leader and started Hooking up and sticking. 3 nice Jacks (6-8# avg) landed after nice really long runs in the surf on semi light tackle ( 7'6 MH Redbone with Shimano Sahara 4000 W. 20# pp) All hit just past the wave break ( like 7 feet out )
Landed one African )ompano as well ( he was only 21" no matter wor hard I pinced his tail so back he went)
When the bait ran out, I started throwing the Storm Swimbait again and hooked up with a nice Snook in the trough that threw the hook....He looked quite a BIT over anyway, but blessed me with a couple long runs before shaking free. I swear I could feel him rubbing the Storm on the sand trying to dislodge it.
There were 3 guys fishing this AM in the same stretch of sand and everyone was hooking up with Med to Larger Jacks as well as a few snook that made it to the shore, however only one made slot.........Conditions were a bit rough at daybreak, but persistance payed off....
Wrapped it up before the first lifegaurd was seated and was home by 9:30 AM to play with my daughter ( This was my NON fishing weekend....lol )
I bled the largest Jack with a throat cut while he was kickin and hung him inder the pier to pump out, came home , cut ALL the bloodline off the filets then smoked him. Believe it or not, They make AWESOME smoked fish dip if you carefully throat cut em when you catch them.....Cannot see me eating a filet by itself anytime soon, but the smoked fish dip and a couple Corona's was a great way to watch the Dolphin game......
I know this thread is useless without pics, but my camera is still at Nikon, getting a new Battery Door put on...
YAK , er...a...I mean PHONEMAN- Why don't we put in early, paddle to the pier area while it is dark out ( Inside the NMZ zone on the beach ) We could be in perfect position to catch bait as soon as the sun comes up - Possibly fish the shoreline with arti's or livies untill 8 or so and then head offshore with the baitwells full...... We could do some Jigging or trolling of pilchards for whatever macs may still be left over.....
