How'd you like find a place to yak that (a) you can reach in not much more than 2 hours, (b) is frequented by many serious guides, © has access to Tarpon (now), (d) bones and flats fish (now), (e) access to some great history and (f) some spots you can spike in a mile offshore where you can stop, hop out, eat lunch and cast into deep offshore channels frequented by migrating tarpon and sharks.
Oh, and a free launch to boot.
Indian Key. What a location. All of the above, plus just plain beautiful. Offshore lighthouse, flats extend WAY out, adjacent to some awesome marine navigation channels. Right across from Indian Key - a great place to land and explore and full of Keys history.
All in the kind of turquoise waters that appear on any tropical postcard and to die for. Heavenly, honest.
I'm tellin ya, Sue Sea paddled out oceanside bout a mile, then pulled off into the adjoining flat, spiked in and just leaned back with a Guiness and enjoyed the vista of the now distant bridge, nearby deepwater channel, visible Gulfstream, surrounded by wading birds and right across from Indian Key.
Doesn't get any better. This is a place where you can do your flats thing, safe from boat traffic, and walk over to the channel and toss out a mullet for huge migrating tarpon. All from one to two miles out.
It makes up for all the bullshit and development now choking the Overseas Highway....
ps the best launch is oceanside, drop me a PM for details.
pps. is it just us or has Keys crowding and events promotion reached a new level of madness. It used to be, and not all that long ago, that the Keys were a great place to escape the madness.
But now the madness has moved to attend the likes of the boat races, motorcycle show, Island "fest" and Truman conference that left not a single room available this weekend past. Not to mention the recent conversion of Curry Hammock to a state-sanctioned parking lot. No more apparent "off" season.
Is is just us...or are things really worse this year?
