Pool noodles may be a very inexpensive addition to your safety equipment.  We've all heard that if you store, say five noodles in your hold that will float a kayak.  I always wondered if that was true.

So I ran the numbers.

Based on an average length of 58 inches, diameter of 2.5 inches and a half inch hole I came up with 1092.72 cubic inches, displacing 0.036127 lbs of water per cubic inch.

Total: 39.48 lbs of buoyancy per noodle. Five noodles would displace 197 lbs.  Actually the old advice isn't all that far off, but I have a few questions:

1.  Are the noodles made of closed cell foam?  All of em?  How could you examine or test them to be sure?

2.  Distribution: seems important to distribute them fore and aft to balance the kayak if you take on water.  Also I wonder how low you'd ride in the water if you used this method?  And how would that affect handling?

All told using em is better than nothing and could easily save your life.  Truth is we don't think about what it'd be like to have to lose our kayak and gear and have to swim to shore.

I didn't think the idea of the noodles was to make your yak usable- i thought it was more to keep it afloat in case of a major leak or other disaster (i.e. attack by shark, alligator or motorboat) that violated hull integrity. Even afloat it wouldn't be any more seaworthy than a swamped SIK or canoe, but it gives you something to be in/on until rescue.  It should be easy enough to test in a pool.

Ideally the idea would be both flotation AND handling - after all it would be nice to actually get back to shore.  Now there are inflated bladders that provide both, but I'd guess the noodles would offer only floatation.

At roughly 39#'s of positive bouyancy/floatation per noodle  I'd have to add a 6th pool noodle.

For pure floatation you could fill the hull with marine expandable floatation foam. Something like Handi Foam SR which offers 60# floatation per cubic foot.

Never sink.
