Yeah, yeah, I know it is not kayak fishing, but I just had to ask about it. There is a lot of saltwater experience here. I hope nobody minds.

What can you tell me about surf fishing? Can I just show up at the beach one morning with my 6 foot spinning rig and start casting and waiting? What is a good, cheap starter rig? What are the best times to go? This surf fishing stuff looks like a good way to unwind in the early AM and maybe catch some lunch.

edited to add: The largest reel I have is a Penn 550SSg.

Variable, what kind of rods or reels are you looking for. I am in the process of selling some of my gear. Let me know what you need.

Hi Chef, I am not exactly sure what I should be looking for as far as surf gear goes. Hence the initial post

You could cruise the beach looking for snook in the breakline.  I use a setup for this that will allow me to cast a light lure a great distance.  My set up for this is an ambasseadeaur 6500 Coupled with at least a 7 foot Med Heavy rod spooled with 12# mono.  Right now, I have slapped the same reel on a 8.5' Ugly stick.....Better distance less backbone for hookset...oh well, can alwayts switch back later.
Usually tie a 3' fleuro leader on this type of setup.  As a far as lures, go with a DOA shrimp, Mirrorlure, or YoZuri Crystal minnow.  CANNOT go wrong with a Gold Spoon either....If I was deserted on a tropical Island with one lure to bring....a Gold Johnson's spoon would be it!
Am starting to get used to using Rapala X Raps....Jury is still out.... but most guys love em.

Cast in the trough between the shore and 1st sand bar.  It is possible to catch runners, jacks, snook, shark and in the fall when the mullet are running Tarpon and anything else that swims.  If sightfishing, cannot go wrong using a Gulp anything ...presented properly, they are unbeatable...

For Baiting and sitting - Theres also the convertional Surfcastting setup 9-12 foot spinning rod coupled with a heavier spinning reel that holds lots of line for long runs by Ray's Shark, Runners, Jacks the occasional mac and even snook

Here I use a Penn 750 because it is versatile and can be slapped on a shorter boat rod when it is appropriate.  The 850 holds more line.   I like 20# mono for this as well....30# is just too visible IMHO....others may differ.

There are various types of Rods that will suit you here, but as distance is not critical, I find a 9 or 10' to be the easiest to handle.  Ugly stick makes a decent surf rod for the $$.  Of course better is available for more $$.  If I were starting out, I'd get a Decent reel and a cheap rod to begin.  Can always upgrade rod later if you surf fish alot.  If not, use the reel somewhere else.....

Different rigs are available for cut bait or live depending on what you choose to do.

Either way, the fall mullett migration will start in a month or 2 DEP. on the wheather up north.  GREAT time to be on the beach just walking and casting...look for pods of bait getting slapped around...
EVERYTHING comes in close to harrass em at that time.....

Thanks for the tips. I scored a free 8ft rod over the weekend. Just gonna go to the Sports Authority for some rigs. I'll start heaving some lures at the beach one of these weekends.
