thanx critterdog. I asked our resident mangrove fishin guru at work about the fish too and he came up with the same opinion ... I guess I should have "fileted and released" them. With my luck I'll never catch another ... lol.

It's great having this forum and you guys as a resource ... I love the Internet .. all this and porn too!

I am thinking about buying a small cast net for bait ... I had a rather bad experieince at a certain bait store Sunday morning and I won't go near that place again ... besides, the fetish store is gone now and that's one less reason for me to be in that vicinity.

Can you throw one of those rigs from a yak? I've never used one before ... would you guys advise against a newb trying it? Or do you have any other suggestions for quick inland live bait methods?

and Tuna .. don't be too "hard on" yourself.

Never get out of the boat.

Never get out of the boat.

How can you go from, the guy gave me some shrimps to, I had a bad experience at the bait store ?

Now about the cast net, may want to re-think that one. Remember your sig, "Never get out of the boat", try throwing the cast net as a novice yak'er, and never threw one of those things before, you may have to change your sig soon.

If you get a cast net, try netting your bait before you launch, then put it away.. you could use a sabiki or small gold hook and catch enough bait for use from the yak.
How much can you carry ?

krash!!! you da man! that's the little boogers for sure.

I'll take your advice on the net and look into the gold hooks and the sabiki thingy (I've looked at those on-line and I'm not quite sure what they do or how to use them).

I can carry three poles if needed and I'm using the standard little Plano bucket with the flip hatch.

Ahhh .. the bait store. I have to control myself here .. I may go off on a rant about the decline of western civilization and customer service. I went on Friday morning .. nice guy behind the counter ..got 2 dozen shrimp and a smiling "leave some fish for the rest of us". I went on Sunday morning .. different guy .... I have to stop here .. he really P'd me off ... he deserves a post by himself. Maybe, "My trip to the bait store".

thanx for the input .... and what in God's name does that sabiki thing do?

Never fall out of the boat.

Sabikis, besides usually getting hooked into you or someone else nearby before the end of the day.. catch bait.
Its multiple feathered jigs with small hooks, you tip a couple with bait (peice of shrimp or squid), drop it down.. one little fishie grabs it and starts swimming around, the rest of the little jigs are now mooving franticly, and a feeding frenzy starts... you can get several little fishies at once.
Now the fun part getting them off the little hooks without hooking yourself on another hook.

Gold hook, one little fishie at a time.

Grunts:

Are you still sure.....

sabiki .. ok. I think I saw a home made "sabiki rod" on here somewhere too. gold hook .. ok. I grasp the concepts now.

croakers .. Like I said, I'm no Marine Bioligist but I do know grunts and snappers. I am a newb to yakking and "serious fishing" but I've been fishing on and off down here since the early 70's. That's the 1870's. So .. out of all the pictures and then there's the noise ... not a grunt, a croak .. I would say yes, in no uncertain terms, those were most likely the fishes ..lol. And there were a lot of them ... every time I dropped a shrimp it got nailed.

Come to think of it I've been a patron of that same unnamed bait facility for the same length of time .. makes me even more PO'd now.

I know everyone thinks West Lake sux .. but I'll tell you another fish story. I was in there Sunday and got skunked but on the way back in I decided to troll a finger mullet lure and just before I hit the bend back into Holland my pole bent (I had it in front of me in the center rod holder) and I heard a huge splash behind me. It scared the beJesus out of me and by the time I grabbed the pole and turned to look behind it was all over .. slack line, big ripples and no fish. I swear it was Tarpon.

krash  ..if your around this Saturday I'll probably be out there again .. you can't miss me .. I'll be the one with sabikis stuck all over his face. I'll show you where I caught that snook.

I'm down and out this weekend.. bass tourney in the glades. The club I fish with, yes stink-potters, has a kool trail, cycles Fresh/Salt/Fresh/Salt... diff. location each month. Sat. is out annual picnic at the big rest stop on the alley noon til 3:30pm, tourney starts at 4pm, weigh in is midnight same ramp. We'll BS and hang out beating the skeeters and probably won't get off the alley til after 1A.

So no time for yak'n this weekend. Lobster mini-season Wed-Thur, then the 28th I have tickets to the Panthers Alumni games, But the following weekend I'll be back on the water somewhere.. so it will likely be Sunday, possibly B-Bay again I'll keep ya'll posted...
