Much like Fisher Island, Jupiter Island has long been known for making things difficult for the public.  Under great duress, the Island finally capitulated and gave the public a way to access their pristine beaches.

Or did they?

Without going into detail Martin County (who wanted more access) and JI (who didn't) have been at odds.  Groups representing the public gathered signatures and worked to enforce and expand lawful access.  The Island finally caved, but only a bit and made available free parking for 54 cars at City Hall but only for those seeking beach access.

A small victory at best.

Yes, you can park there.  But the list of restrictions would choke a grouper.  No more than 54.  Only on weekends and holidays.  No use of bicycles and the beach is a mile away!   No changing of clothes in the lot (you have to walk over a mile to change at the beach).  Hmm.   The city tied this to a land trade with the Coast Guard at Bon Aire Beach which is much closer to the beach, and certainly had the room to offer public parking and beach access.

But noooooooooooooooo.

This area will be used to store equipment and beach rejuvenation supplies et al (there is alleged to be plenty of room).  In sum:  public access will be minimal, restricted and discouraged.

In a related note, you golfing fans (I am one) may be interested to know:

Quote
Two years after buying a 23 million Florida waterfront estate (on Jupiter Island), Tiger Woods has bulldozed virtually everything to make way for an executive "mega home".

Woods, the world's highest earning sportsman, snapped up 10 immaculately-appointed acres of what Forbes magazine has dubbed "The world's most expensive zip code" and ripped it all up so he could start again.

The existing 13-year-old mansion has gone, as have three other large houses, two swimming pools, basketball, tennis and volleyball courts and a mini-golf course on the estate on Jupiter Island.

Woods's architects have drawn up plans for a 10,000 sq ft, two-story house that - on paper, at least - wouldn't look out of place in the average business park.

A glass lift runs from the grand entrance to the first floor where there will be three bedrooms and a master suite with his-and-her bathrooms. A basement will house a large wine cellar and possibly a cinema and games area. Adjoining the house, which features huge windows, will be four other new buildings, including a boat house, golf training studio, three-car garage and guest house.

Outside, there will be a tennis court, gym, pool, lap lane and a small golf course. A pair of boat docks will provide a berth for Woods's 155ft, 10 million yacht, "Privacy".

Scores of trees have been re-planted and heavy landscaping will provide the Woods family with the privacy they require on an island which bans high boundary walls.

Fore!

And the beat goes on: Jupiter vs Marin

A brief review:  Hobe Sound Beach, along with the 735-acre National Wildlife Refuge Beach on the exclusive island's north end, were gifts from Joseph and Permelia Reed, who developed Jupiter Island.  The gift was made to Marin County, but the beach is within Jupiter who has it's own city government.

Accordingly the county and city disagree.  Oddly enough the weather founder/developer of Jupiter wisely gifted Hobe and the Refuge to the county for the people.

Wealthy Jupiter, like Fisher Island simply doesn't care and wants to keep the riffraff - ie the public - off their faux private beaches.  Not gonna happen.  But Jupiter keeps trying, and has passed restrictive laws on the basis that the residents are complaining about finding condoms in the morning.

Poor babies. (or maybe not, lol).

So it's back to court - both legal and in the court of public opinion.  Embarassed Jupiter has taken down their signs, and I assume the barb wire temporarily.
