I know this is an older post but wanted to add my .02 RE gulp products.
In short, they work. Are they always necessary...well.
Let's consider a few things - First, the bite....When fish are feeding heavily and are stricking from a reactionary posture, a good day, anything presentable will get a hit. On this type of day, the $$ for gulps are hard to justify.
OTOH on slower days ehrn the hits are fewere in between, I KNOW that the Gulps will make a difference. Though the action on a gulp ( I use mostly jerkbaits ) is neither far greater or worse than a Zoom, the scent and taste DOES make a difference. The Action and water disturbance (vibration) made by artificials is what will get the fishes attention, thus triggering a follow, or a reactionary strike ( if you are lucky ) It is however the scent of the Gulp that 'seals the deal' onthe follow, thus convincing the fish it is flesh, not rubber he is biting.
I haver used broken Gulp baits, in Homosassa, as" Cut bait" when we ran out of live shrimp and caught reds untill we ran out of those too. I have been sceptical untill that day of ANY scented or impregnated bait, sure they worked and did not put the angler at a disadvantage, or at best hide the human scent, however it was hard to justify the cost. After seeing 'cut Gulps' in action firsthand, I am a believer.
Bear in mind, I will not always use em first because of the $$ factor, but I usually have a bag in my pocket for when things get a bit tough......
