I've always kidded that you can fish from anything. And here's proof...

Where: Miami Beach
What: Half-Day Sailfish Tournament, Chairman Bouncer Smith
Among: 10-boat sportsfisherman fleet
By: Capt. Ray Rosher, Jason Jennings, Kett Toomey
With: non-motorized, inner tube rafts
Yup. Kayak Willie finally got trumped. By non-motorized inner tube rafts yet. And it gets better. Famous local charter skipper Capt. Ray Rosher (pic above) WON the tourney with three releases, then got a QUAD hookup after "lines-out" and both tagged and released all four! And the other two tubers all caught multiple sails. Dang. Doubledang!
|"It was incredible. I think the rafts outfished the whole charterboat fleet today," said tournament organizer Capt. Matt Tambor. "We talked about doing it out of kayaks. They were a little expensive, so we decided to use huge tractor tires." |
Rosher used a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood with a PVC frame and 16 rodholders, two floating bait wells, a sea anchor, and four storage buckets. He chummed and used circle hooks. He fished 4 rods at a time, plus two kite rods. At one point Toomey was surrounded by two camera boats (for a TV show), a helicopter and a shark as he fought one sail.
Capt. Mike Faircloth, one of the sportfisherman contenders said it best:
|"If a bunch of buys catch sailfish out there on rafts, what's that going to say about a $300,000 boat?"|
A total of 14 sails were caught and released by the 10-boat fleet. They were outfished by the three rafts. Bottom line:
We have no more excuses.
