Well, I know many of you are aware of the grandfather of our sport, Kayak Willie. A good man who sadly has a few physical problems which now prevent him from paddlin much.
Well I had a chance to go offshore with Willie today at first light, not returning til early PM. It was fun and a rare opportunity to watch and learn from a guy who is one of the greats.
First hit was from a large Wahoo, which was not hooked (Willie told me how to distinguish a Wahoo from the bite...whew!). Not long after a real hookup which I took and fought - about a 3 ft. Dolphin (Mahi Mahi for Chef Mike). Took at least 15 or 20 minutes of hard fighting, pump and reelin. Probably the toughest fight I've had with any fish so far.
Couple of outstanding jumps with at least a 100 yards out. You know the picture...line angling down into the water with a distance flash of green and the line curling up into the air, then crashing back into the swells.
Day ending with snorkeling in the shallows and Willie expertly filleting it. Learned a bunch from how he rigs ballyhoo, to various other techniques. He shared with me spots where yakfishers have a real chance at kings, wahoos, sails, dolphin and even some marlin...
I'm still awestruck...
