Snook Workshop @ IGFA Thursday 1/25 6-8Pm, be there to hear and/or speak out and be heard.

http://myfwc.com/marine....ing.pdf

GENERAL SUBJECT MATTER TO BE CONSIDERED: The purpose of the workshop is to review the Commission’s recent snook assessment, and to review the snook workgroup recommendations that include narrowing the current slot, changes to closed seasons, and dropping the Atlantic coast daily bag limit to 1 fish. The recent assessment concluded that snook are not meeting their management goal of 40% spawning potential ratio and increasing fishing effort is contributing to the declining SPR.

I'm one of the few that showed, I can't believe that every inshore guide, tackle shop owner, and a good percentage of us fishermen was not there, but I guess it just shows the actual state of our Snook fishery compared to that of the Jupiter and North Snook fishery.

This meeting was a summary of other workshop meetings that have been held, (plus years of research), outlining a short-list of options that FWC plans to present, asking for our support and/or opinion's.

Very poor turnout, 5 people from FWC were there presenting, and very few in the audiance listeing or speaking out. Guides Bouncer Smith, Bob Lamay, Tom (tackle shop owner) xxxx from Lighthouse Point and his sidekick Mike, 2 news paper people, my self, and 3 other interested people.  (109 people showed up at the Ft. Pierce meeting)

I feel badly for the Lisa Ockelmann & Jessica McCawley, and the others from FWC, trying to do the right thing for us and we don't even show. Shame on us.

The reasearch presented was based on the Spawning Potential Ratio, which is currently 25-26%, with indicators it needs to be somewhere near 40% for us to have a healthy Snook Fishery.

Here's a couple of the proposed & ideas tossed around the room.
1) Squeeze Slot size again to 28" - 32"
2) Bag limit dropped to 1 in Atlantic region
3) Close September

Ideas from FWC to help raise funds for additional research and enforcement.
1) Require ShoreBound Salt Water License
2) Raise price of Snook Stamp ex. $10.00

The reasarch indicates that if they do nothing the Florida Snook fishery is in trouble.
