should this thread make me feel like I should stop posting? ... or at least curtail my blatherings? I hope no one actually takes any of my advice ... am I wrong or are we recently seeing more participation from more postors? ... what does this all mean? .. did you see that commercial with the chimps doing the Riverdance?

Heck no!

This thread is aimed solely and entirely at the primate penetration and takeover at commercial humongasites - specifically KFS - primarily due to its immense size and near absence of any moderation.

Houdini's quote was posted at KFS and referred to one of the two nasty threads that developed there in response to the Simian Series.

Fortunately, the Forum in Paradise tends to attract competent, independent, free and pleasantly humorous posters such as yourself.  I love your posts, and don't tell Sue Sea, but I love you in that special way that only other yakfishers understand, lol...

Keep your posts comin!

I no longer pay much attention to the KFS' simian sideshow and am pleased to be able to give more time to the Forum which continues to serve about 2400 unique yakfishing visitors each month, bout 150,000 hits.

A nod also to some new moderators: Kayak Jeff who has agreed to moderate the section on safety, to Key West guide/drummer Randrums - now moderating "Lowah Keys" - and who can be of great assistance to anyone needing info bout fishin the lower Keys, and last - to Alberto (the former OK rep) who really knows the industry in general and SOT's in particular.

Since visiting and becoming a member, I have enjoyed reading the posts, for the most parts, and find little of what can be called "blather", and most are focused on whatever the subject happens to be.  Congratulations to Jimbo.

I would not be concerned about the sites such as KFS, because after a while only the BS'ers read their own s***. Those who want look at more serious discussions will go elsewhere.  Bloggers are everywhere, and those who say less, attract more who contribute less, etc., etc.

My only comment about posts on this site, is that at times a post starts with one subject and then migrates unintentionally to a totally different subject, so that if you are interested in the subject highlighted you soon end up in a different subject.  I would recommend to responders to a post , that you stick to the subject or start a new post.

Cap, I couldn't agree more with your position on this.  Shame but that site is way out of control and a relatively small number of posters really have taken over.  It's not just that they post a lot, newbies and anyone who disagrees get jumped on.

On one thread I happened to quote you - wasn't long before a couple of the alphas accused me of being you!  It's nuts.

I checked the list of top posters and happen to notice there were a few sane souls, like Capt Jimbo himself. Some of the top guys are pretty sharp and devoted to quality kayaks, like "Luna Sea", who may very well have the largest Kaskazi collection in the South, or "Vivian", who is one of the most dedicated tourers in South FL.

Just because some people blather doesn't mean that they don't know what they're talking about. The problem isn't the idiots, it's knowing who the idiots are and knowing that not everyone who's self-righteous is right. Looking at the numbers just tells you who likes to talk (or in KFS's case, who's been around for a long time).

Got to take the good with the bad. As for me I've said most of what I have to on that forum, and fought most of the fights I feel like fighting. I still moderate but just to keep the peace.

The solution to the problem that the good Capt. sees isn't to shell the beaches from distant web sites, it's to get onto the beach and take the hill away from the bad characters. There are a lot of impressionable newbies out there that need your help.

Right on Santy.   I led off that article ("Meet the Fokkers") by stating "Are all these alpha-posters dummies? Of course not (just most of em). But you'll figure it out....

I can see you have - along with the great majority of other rational posters.  Keen's article makes a great argument for active and expert moderation, sadly lacking.  Accordingly, KFS - and many other similar websites - have been taken over by the monkeys.

:capn:
ps. For those who want to catch up, please refer to the first post or two in this series for the links.

pss. the premier mega alpha-monkey thread I mentioned before (which was almost 1300 posts, 63 pages and over 16,000 views less than two months ago) is now up to 97 pages, 1932 posts and over 26,300 views.  This single thread, which started over 5 months ago, is still going strong, and is still dominated by a handful of posters who continue to aimlessly spew forth.

The biggest problem with KFS from this sites perspective is the lack of dedicated paddlers on the site. The original crew were fisher folks with limited interest in paddling. They have mostly moved on (or over) and sold it off to a retailer who's focus is, well, retailing.

I doubt the majority of folks who view the board have any real design or paddling knowledge, but there are a few. Most are there to connect their fishing interests with a new vehicle to get to the fish.

But lots of folks read it, so it would be a pity to leave them to the lowest common denominators. If you have expertise, bring it over.

I read the link on Hobies and have to say it's dead on. I haven't been on that part of the site for many months. I don't own Hobies and don't have a lot of patience for people who lack broad perspective. I briefly got into a  discussion with an owner and retailer who swore that their boats were the fastest out there (compared to their friends who paddle waterborne docks I guess).

Maybe it's time to post the Capt's Hobie talking points one at a time through various posters to keep the discussion fair and balanced.

There's nothin like feedin time at the Primate Pavillion!

I thought a brief summary was in order now (actually this is a belated post).  The series of articles based on "KFS - Kayaking For Simians" was posted on our main site only and was not advertised at all (all links in the first post).  This was done for several reasons:

First, that I was serious bout finding KFS largely irrelevent and tiresome.  And that really has been taken over by the monkeys.  Second, that I felt that by posting there I only drew traffic and attention away from the Forum in Paradise which honestly deserves my primary attention.  And last, that I was just plain curious how long it would take the primates to scavenge and find these lil jewels.  And the answer was...

Not long at all.

Within days the hits went WAY up.  It is typical that the Forum in Paradise gets about 2500 to 3000 unique visitors each month, or about 150 different visitors a day.  In a matter of days the daily visits doubled and the Simian articles garnered 1300 unique visits - and continue to grow.

It was feeding time at the Primate Pavillion and the din was deafening.  Not less than two threads appeared at KFS, entitled "Famous at Last" and "Capt Dumbo's list". Together these ran 10 pages, 177 posts and 4307 views (probably more by now)!  Almost all of the nearly 200 posts consisted of namecalling, personal attacks and literally hundreds of emoticons.  While the KFS megathread based on my Disco review has ballooned to a mindnumbing size of 72 page, 1427 posts and 19,291 views (this single thread is now 98 pages, and closing on 2000 posts and 27,000 views)!!!

This one aimless thread, dominated by a handful of alpha posters) is akin to a website all by itself.  It is a caricature of a charicature.  And all based on my Disco review.  Pretty scary, really.

All dominated by a handful of red-assed primate posters!  They were really mad. Havabanana!
