This is Brandon signing in from Geiger key.  If any of you have a question about yak'n from Bahia Honda to Key West, fire away.  Don't know the whole area, but have yaked quite a bit of it.
I'm not a 'sport fisher' exactly - just like to catch what I can eat - but still have managed to catch many types of fish somehow....sheer hours on water I suppose.  I also take my snorkel and spear gun from time to time.
While I'm happy to answer any questions, you probably won't be seeing much in the way of fishing reports until May.  I'm putting final touches on hew house and doubling up on a masters degree (only make that mistake once, going back to regular time this summer).

take care,
b

Hey Brandon, how are you!
I used to spend time down in Ohio key with my folks. They used to have a mobile home in Sunshine Key resort. Great area. I have never worked the area in a kayak. When you get some time free send me an email. would like to work a number of those areas in the lower keys.
take care. Chef Mike

If I can attach pics I can send you a pic I made in paintshop of a maptech map.  That's a start.

Is that possible on here?  I don't have a website to post them to.  If not I'll email you.

Welcome Brandon...

I'm so pleased to have Brandon as our Lower Keys moderator.  We've met (at the last Yak In), exchanged emails, have published a number of Brandon's super fishing pics, and have even had a few gentlemanly debates bout yak design.

But he was and remains a gentleman, fine person and great guy.  Sue Sea and I would love to visit, bring our tent if ya wouldn't mind sparing a 9 x 9 section of sand...

This auto-notify via email works great cuz i've always got that open and usually welcome a break from perpetual homework  :p

You're welcome to come down and crash...just make sure you crash when you get here, not before!  (US1 is crazy)
If it's extended period tent is fine and can use our bbq pit.  If it's just a day or two you're welcome to our extra bedroom.

BTW, found some nice pics on paddling.net today, one is of big pine, another of charlotte harbour.  I may send up your way.

later,
b

Hey Toddbbq,

Saw on another thread that you caught fish off of boca chica. Were you the one who fished the sub pens? Are you in the military or is there public access on boca chica. FYI, I hear geiger key has a nice launch and there might be a couple of fish around there.

Todd,
A good place to check is Sugarloaf Marina.  They have quite a seletion to try.  Did you make it up to Largo for Bogie&Bacall?  Even if not, FBO up there has a lot to try as well.

I'm on Geiger now but haven't gone out once since move here at Christmas.  Acutally haven't gone since last summer.  Just way too busy w/ the house then school.  I will be dropping my school load at end of Feb so may be able to go out after that.

If you know the pens, let me know.  I have a reserve ID still, but from what I can tell looking off the hwy you can just drive back there.  I know a couple of guys that say there's some big fish in there....they are special forces instructors.
Anyway, I'd love to do the sub pens sometime this summer.  First need to get out and do these flats right around my house!  I'm excited since it's something new and seems more accessible than the areas around Big Pine I'm used to.  Bahia Honda just got old, if you can imagine that  ???

take it easy,
brandon

Brandon,

Bahia Honda just got old!!  :p  I feel for you man, I really do!

Hey, I might be in the BPK area around the first week of May. I'm looking into coming down for an event on another board called poontangle. I'll be one of the few yakkers.

Know where you're going to go exactly, or just the BP area?
Incase you didn't see on another part of the site or in any of FLYC prev emails, there's a site I've been using for a few years that is really good for the Keys at least.  www.maptech.com and go to the mapserver option then online maps.  You can look at both satellite and nautical maps and try to find holes and where you want to try.

I've caught jacks and snapper at NoName Key Bridge then 22" adn 25" gags up the channel, but that whole area in general isn't very good except for a nice trout flat but you need a boat to get to it (have done the channel all the way to Spanish Harbour bridge and out, plus into the backwater, both via boat and yak).
I've pulled some mangrove snapper and juvie cuda out of the bridge at NoName, but go to the NoName side, not the BP side of the bridge.  No one fishes over there, even bridge fishers.  By yak I discovered some holes back there but had hard time fishing because the tidal rush over the skinny water leading to it really moves you around....plus the bugs, holy cow the bugs.  Anyway, came back quite a few times and fished off the bridge after learning the layout under it w/ the yak and pulled some nice fish out.
So if nowhere else is doing any good, just head out to that bridge :)  Also be sure to get a pizza at NoNamePub when you're done!

good luck!
