Readin the Herald this am and yet another Keys tragedy, and so sad.  What a Xmas present for these poor folks...

The Jolly Roger Travel Park is an old time Keys trailer park of yore.  Some empty travel spots, over 60 lots for mobile homes. I've seen it.  Where a number of ordinary folks bought their piece of paradise.  With a magnificent view of the sunsets, a great lifestyle and an affordable place to spend one's final years.  Lots of pleasant double wides with caring owners who've become good neighbors and friends over the last 25 years.

No more.  They just got rude yellow eviction notices taped to their door, giving them 6 months to get out. Over 160 people who will be displaced, with nowhere to go, no affordable alternatives in their beloved Keys.  Kids that will get ripped away from their friends and classmates.  A disabled Keys musician who will lose his gigs and little income, and ability to support his disabled wife. Among many others.

The park owner, citing the effects of the hurricanes and out of "concern" for the vulnerability of mobile homes, stating "...it just isn't appropriate to see people continue to put money in these places that can eventually be wiped out".  Bushwa!!

Florida law protect such people, giving renter associations the first right of refusal to purchase a property.  But guess what - the owner says he isn't gonna sell right now, effectively bypassing the law. Right!  Wanna bet it isn't on the market in 6 months and one day?  Wanna bet he doesn't already have a developer/buyer?

The city of Marathon ain't much help either.  The mayor sez "The city definitely has a concern...but...there may not be a whole lot we can do."  Other than continuing to take hefty campaign contributions from their developer buds.

Makes me wanna puke.  Again.

ps.  Is there anything we can do?  Maybe.  For those who are so inclined:

Yeah, there's something we can do long term:
Stop voting in big business interests to run our governments who also invite their crony buddies to sit on life term bench appointments, recount votes, remain unaccountable to anyone and in general, kill the wrong people.

Ah, the price we pay for the rich man's idea of freedom.

Makes me very sad.:(
