This is probably of minimal interest to yakfishers (but it should be), but is of great interest to those, like me, who added a stable surfski to their collections. Some of you may remember the series on the Hurricane Phoenix ripoff of the T140.
It is HUGE news in the surfski world when Greg Barton/Oscar Chalupskys vaunted V10, which took over $200,000 in development costs and a computer generated plug - has been copied. The XLR8 sells for, gulp, $2000 less and is promoted on the idea of greater quality than Epic's Chinese manufacturer (this is believable).
The surfski world is up in arms and has really taken issue with this rip. The dialogue is amazing - even if you don't give a hoot bout surfskis the heated subject of copying and derivation of design is very well worth a read:

Copied by a guy named Damian Daley and "XLR8 Watersports". He calls his V10 copy the "Odyssey". His defense: "XLR8 decided to use approx. 70% of the V10 changing the tail, deck, rudder, adjustable foot system, venturi system, construction lay-up and seam set-up.".
Most posters argue that his changes were trivial and accordingly unethical if not downright illegal. Some are proposing the XLR8 be banned from racing.
