Pal's link and this picture of the event are entirely true; it is of a whale that is "lunge feeding" through a school of bait. Reminds me of a redfish I had on at the Humminbird - hehe - great post Pal.
Had the great pleasure to be able to communicate with Joe, the yakker in the pic. He was riding a brand new OK Malibu that he'd rented for his past time of naturewatching.
He came upon a very large school of small baitfish and notice a huge "bubbling up" of the water next to his yak (look closely, the bubbling or froth surrounds his boat and the whale); he looked down iinto the water to see what was happening, noted the baitfish, and heard a sound.
He then looked up and found himself looking straight into the blow hole of this large sperm whale. Joe said he was glad he didn't look up earlier as he was sure looking into that gaping mouth comin up would have given him a heart attack.
Apparently the whale slid back down into the water; Joe's yak was not upset (altho Joe clearly was). Joe - thanks for sharing the info, we are all amazed and invite you to Florida to go yakfishin with us anytime....
