When I spooled up my bait caster, I used no backing because the spool design allowed it to grip. (I tired like heck to get it to slip with just a few wraps, it didn't so I spooled fully with Fireline) On the babysmooth spools, I can see where a backing would be needed. Using a superbraid does require that you learn a few special knots for leader and lures if tying direct. Another tip used is to apply a dot of superglue to your knot. A little added insurance against knot slippage.
