Some of you may have noticed a distinct lack of posting by moi - after maybe 6 years of frequent, fascinating and facile missives. Here's the deal...
There's only so much to say about kayaking. Honest.
It's not nuclear science, it's a kayak fer gawds sake. Kayaks and paddles - and kayak fishing for that matter - have been around for thousands of years, and some of the best designs come from that era, designed out of necessity and proven by effectiveness and survival, not computer analysis.
What you have now are are bunch of marketing mavens - in search of more and growing markets - who have almost no interest in overall performance, but every interest in increasing sales and profits. Ergo the fat, "stable", high-primary designs created to accomodate accessories, reel-destroying flush mounts, flimsy footrest, a jungle of bungies, clips, hatches, handles - you name it. A Hilliary Clinton kitchen sink strategy.
All designed to attract the newbie who doesn't have a clue. And you simply can't overestimate the gullibility of the kayak-naive buying public. Great all-around designs - like the Scupper Pro - have gone by the wayside to be replaced by the OK Big Pig. What a joke. I have covered this trend in great detail.
And there's simply not much more to say.
You know it's reached the point of information saturation when a sites like KFS actually has over 300,000 posts and a single thread that has been going over a year with over 3,000 posts and 40,000 views alone. And almost all by the same five or ten posters. A real waste.
The little truly valuable information is buried in monkeyshit. And I refuse to allow that to happen here. I've said what needed to be said, all intended to educate and inspire - and I know when to shut up. No dead horses beaten here.
The site will remain, it's all yours now. I will no longer spent my valuable hours posting "interesting" but nonessential factoids and bits to simply entertain you. Now I will post from time to time, but only when something truly valuable and new comes along (like a new kayak sail Kayak Jeff allowed me to test), or to answer questions directed to me.
In closing, I have been amazed to find that the number of hits and views have actually increased over the past couple months, and I continue to get email from learning newbies. So this site continues to have value and will be left up.
It's your resource now if you wish to use it. You can rest assured many people continue to check it and read it. Good luck - and here's to our mutual health!!
