I am from Tampa I never caught or hooked a tarpon but I was wondering is there a year round population of Tarpon in SE Florida or is it a seasonal thing like there is in Tampa? Also I was wondering how do you catch them?

Both, seasonal in some places and year round at spots.

Best place for big is Government Cut, winter during the shrimp run months. Free line live jumbo shrimp.

Excuse my query-but isn't Government Cut pretty tough country for a kayak? Last time I was there(in an offshore center console)there was major traffic and some REALLY large ships. I have talked to Capt. Bouncer Smith(the tarpon man in that area) and he has had some close encounters with major ships while hooked up. Bouncer is usually in a Dusky 33. I really want to tangle with a large 'poon-just want to survive the encounter intact. :D

110% Agreed, G-cut is certainly a hazard for any boat, and that Bouncer Smith is da' man.

If someone asked me who shold I book for a tarpon trip, thats who I would point to.

The question was is there a year round population, and how do you catch them.
